Typing further characters of a command's name will provide you with the full command and its current and default settings. For example, type "cg_" (without quotes) into the console and all the commands starting with cg_ will be shown. If you simply type the first few characters of a command into the console, it will provide you with a list to choose from. See the Commands section on the next page to see a list of useful commands along with descriptions of their functionality. Note that although technically there is a difference between a command and a dvar, I generally refer to all of these as 'commands' in this guide for the sake of convenience. The console is the main place to input a range of Development Variables (dvars) as well as Commands, which do everything from change the way certain objects behave in the game, through to controlling all aspects of the game's graphics, audio and control settings. The expanded console is particularly useful for seeing the output of your commands, system warnings, errors, etc. To get the expanded console, press the SHIFT key and ~ key together (SHIFT+~).

Now you can access the console at any time by pressing the '~' key (the key above ESC) to open and close it. To access the console, under the Options screen go to Game Settings and make sure the 'Enable Console' setting is set to Yes. It will even let you change the colour of your ping bar - if that floats your boat.Call of Duty 2 allows us to get into some advanced tweaking, because the game's command console is easily accessible, and a wide range of commands can be brought up and used to further refine the game. This handy little program lets you adjust config settings and more before running the game. It also highlights that there's an issue with Modern Warfare 3 for certain Orange Broadband customers in the UK. MapModNews has a whole load of more specific problems complete with fixes. Works a treat if you're having problems with older graphics cards. To force DirectX 9 compatibility mode right-click on the game in Steam and choose 'Properties', 'General', 'Set Launch Options' and enter '-dx9'. Set this to zero to stop the game processing sound equalisation. Sets your mouse's sensitivity - great for twitchy gamers. Reduce or increase this to set the volume level of the cinematic music. Maximum and minimum anisotropic settings - set the former to '8' for maximum performance, but bear in mind that this may impact your frame rates. Seta r_texFilterAnisoMax "4"/seta r_texFilterAnisoMin "1" Reduce it if you're prone to migraines, or to improve performance.

This sets the number of light flashes on screen at once. Lower this to reduce the number of floppy limb simulations on screen at once. Ragdoll physics mean that dead 'uns fly around the screen and impact with buildings. '2' will enable depth of field in the foreground and background. 0 is the default, '1' sets it to 'world' meaning only objects in the background are blurred. This entry will let you tweak it more precisely that the in-game options menu.

To use this setting, you'll have to turn off depth of field in the main settings. If you find the constant stream of ejected bullet casings flying out of your weapon distracting, change the '1' in this entry to '0'. If you screw things up you can just delete the config files and Steam will automatically regenerate them. Once you've tweaked it, save the file in its original location. Open 'em up in notepad, and run a find (Ctrl+F) to go straight to the relevant entries. config.cfg alters settings for singleplayer, and config_mp.cfg adjusts multiplayer. You'll find the relevant files in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 3\players2. Under the hood, buried in the config files, there are a few more values you might want to tweak to get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 just the way you like it. If you don't mind your smoke looking a little harder (and who doesn't?) you can turn Soften Smoke Edges off for a mild FPS boost.
